Fairtrade

Fairtrade is very important to us at Ponthir CiW School.  We gained Fairtrade Status earlier this year.

We have a Fairtrade School Policy, which states our commitment to supporting Fairtrade by:

*  ensuring Fairtrade is part of our School Development Plan and taught as part of the curriculum

*  using Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar in the staff room and meetings

*  using Fairtrade ingredients for cooking activities and classroom activities

*  purchase Fairtrade goods in school (eg footballs) and promote Fairtrade goods (eg school uniform)

*  encourage others to use Fairtrade products and promote Fairtrade in the school and wider community.

We have close links Martha from Love Zimbabwe, who is a regular visitor to our school and has taken a number of whole school and community assemblies to spread the message about Fairtrade,  We also like to support her company Love Zimbabwe buy purchasing some of her beautiful Fairtrade goods.

We have a Fairtrade Steering Committee in school, led by pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6.  All of our Fairtrade work is closely linked to our Eco Committee work, and all the members of the Eco Committee help out with Fairtrade activities- including our youngest pupils in Reception.  We have a Fairtrade policy which states our commitment to Fairtrade.

We have held several Fairtrade events this year including our Big Brew, and a Fairtrade wine tasting evening.

Here are some examples of how Fairtrade has been discussed and studied across the curriculum:

In Reception, the children set up a Fairtrade market as part of their topic work on Africa.  In Year 5 and 6 the pupils created, made and played Fairtrade games, and designed Fairtrade chocolate bars.  In Years 3 and 4 the pupils found about Fairtrade goods by reading diary extracts.  Years 1 and 2 set up a Fairtrade shop in maths, and explored fair and unfair games in PE.

We are always thinking of new ways of spreading the Fairtrade message - we are hoping to hold Fairtrade tuck shops soon, and a whole school Fairtrade Breakfast.

Fairtrade Wine tasting - at our recent Gambian event, guests were invited to try different varieties of  Fairtrade wine.
